In recent years the emphasis on First Aid training has increased - Staff who carry out certain activities are required to hold a current First Aid certificate, but the ATC is now looking at offering training to all Cadets. We are linked to St John Ambulance, and offer the Lifesaver Plus course for over 18s cadets and the Young Lifesaver Plus (YLSP) course for those under 18. Our adult staff holding a suitable First Aid Certificate are able to train and assess the YLSP award. We have four trained First Aiders at present, Flt Lt Gruchy, AWO Dobson, CI Buckingham and CI Smithson. Young Lifesaver Plus Award The course is an 8 hour course and is assessed by a written exam with a 70% pass mark and a series of 3 practical exams. Topics covered include : Managing a situation CPR - the unconscious casualty Disorders of Breathing (choking, asthma etc) Disorders of Circulation (heart attack, angina etc) Poisoning Fractures Head Injuries This training helps young people deal with situations they may come across, and more importantly is useful and a vital part of the training we provide before they participate in DofE expeditions. |
