Activities D of E Adventure Training Flying and Gliding Camps Shooting - PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION Cadets can currently fire three different rifles, as well as air rifles where facilities exist. The .22 No 8 rifle is where their training begins, and all cadets will receive extensive instruction, handling tests and when ready closely monitored live firing. Once they have developed confidence and experience we can begin to hone their skills, encouraging greater control and accuracy, allowing cadets to compete in competitions. The .22 rifle can be used in or outdoors, and is ideal for practising marksmanship skills. From the age of 14 cadets may fire the L98. This is a more powerful weapon and is very different to operate than the .22, as it is a more modern and complicated weapon. The L98 is used outdoors at ranges up to 300 metres. The L81 is a larger weapon and has only recently returned after a 10 year absence. Cadets will shortly be given the opportunity to fire this. All ranges are controlled by qualified and well training members of staff, and shooting teaches the cadets to listen, follow instruction and have a respect for what they are doing. It is a fun activity and there is always more to achieve. There are four main types of firing that can be carried out : GROUPING is aiming to get all the shots in the same place. As long as the group is on the target its position is not important. APPLICATION/DELIBERATE is points scoring. Firers must try to adjust their aim to hit as near to the centre of the target as possible. RAPID is a high speed version of the above. A time slot will be allocated for the number of rounds you have. Its tricky when you first start - do you go really fast and lose accuracy or aim to fire some of the shots well?? In time you should be able to be both fast and accurate! SNAP is a discipline where the targets are exposed for short intervals. The firer can only fire a round when the target is visible. The ATC awards 4 levels of Marksmanship. They can be obtained on any weapon, with slightly different criteria.
