Annual Awards Evening Success 2006

The Squadrons recent Open evening attracted over 70 guests and parents , who were able to witness the presentation of over 150 individual awards and achievements.

Wing Commander Hipperson, Officer Commanding Norfolk & Suffolk Wing presented the awards and also spoke of how well the Squadron continues to perform.  He thanked the units CO, Flt Lt Jo Gruchy and her staff for their hard work in offering the many opportunities to the cadets.

The units main trophies were handed out with tough competition for the annual awards.

Cdt Gerard Vejrych won the Marksmanship award for gaining the units first Corps marksman, the top qualification available.

Two Distinction passes in this years exams gained Cpl Joey Barfe the academic award.

Cdt Ben Bowler gained two awards, the WO shield for best uniform and Cadet of the Year for his impressive involvement, enthusiasm and achievement.

Cdt Danny Cable was presented with the Most Promising New Recruit trophy after a busy year.

Flt Sgt Robert Miller also took away two awards, the first of which was the COs award presented for his achievement in Ground Training which included a 200 hour MV certificate, BTECs in Public Services and Aviation Studies, Silver Duke of Edinburgh and a Distinction in the training syllabus.  The second trophy was the Dextrous Dobson trophy for showing the greatest LACK of dexterity!!

The top award of the evening was the Hart Cup presented to the member of the Squadron who has contributed most in terms of involvement, achievement and assisting in developing the unit.  This year two cadets were very close and so a runners up certificate was presented to Cpl Matthew Miller.

The winner of the Hart Cup, however, has shown outstanding commitment to the unit over the past 12 months.  CWO Tom Sheas' involvement with the unit sees him putting in 15 hours a week minimum, taking on important tasks and completing them quickly and accurately.  He has also made several personal achievements including a Flying Scholarship, and his Wings were presented at the Awards evening.

Flt Lt Jo Gruchy said "The cadets are a credit to themselves and the unit.  They are so keen to join in and achieve in all the activities.  The evening was a great success and many compliments were passed to me on the standard of the cadets."
