Commissioned Officers

  • Pilot Officer
  • Flying Officer
  • Flight Lieutenant
  • Squadron Leader
  • Wing Commander

Officers usually form the management team of a Squadron.  Each officer will normally have a specific role(s) depending on how many staff there are on a unit.  One of the Officers will be the Commanding Officer (usually a Flight Lieutenant) and he or she is solely responsible for the management and running of the whole unit.  They report to the Officers at Wing Headquarters.

To become an Officer you must be between 20 and 55 years of age.  Some senior cadets may apply to become an Officer when they reach 20, but most will be Civilian Instructors who decide to go into uniform.  If they are interested and their Commanding Officer considers them suitable they will go forward for a Wing Board and then a Regional Board which will decide whether or not to appoint them.  Officers are appointed as Pilot Officers, and promoted to Flying Officer after 2 years satisfactory service and passing the Initial Officers Course at our dedicated Adult Training Facility at RAFC Cranwell.  Promotion to Flight Lieutenant comes with appointment as Commanding Officer and completion of the Officers Senior Course at the Adult Training Facility, or after a further 7 years service.

ATC Officers receive all their uniform from the Royal Air Force, and wear the same cap badges as regular RAF Officers.

Officers can claim up to 28 days pay for attending certain activities, at the equivalent RAF starting salary for their rank, and can claim expenses and travel to cover many of their costs.

The main distinguishing feature is the gold VRT badge they wear on their rank slides.
