Civilian Instructor

Civilian Instructors (CI) come from many different walks of life.  There is no "ideal" CI as each offers their own unique skills, and each will contribute in different and valuable ways.

Teaching and training cadets

Learning new skills in new places

Gain qualifications

Some will be ex cadets or ex uniformed staff, others may be parents or other family members, some will have never been involved with the ATC before.

Everyone who wishes to join the Squadron in an adult post will join as a CI first, except for senior cadets who transfer straight across.  There are no special skills required, except that you are keen, enthusiastic and want to get involved.  If you do have a particular skill we can use, we will always be interested in trying to provide new opportunities for our cadets.

As a CI there is no minimum time commitment, and there are a wide range of activities open for you to participate in if you are interested.  CIs may attend courses to gain Adventure Training or Sports coaching qualifications, instructional courses, go flying, gliding, shooting, attend Summer Camps and of course join in with all the Squadron activities on offer.

CI requirements

  • At least 20 years old
  • Be able to attend parade nights (Doesn't have to be every week)
  • Subject to CRB check

Once you have been a CI for a few months it is possible to move into a uniformed role if you are interested and you have the right skills.

Please contact Flt Lt Jo Gruchy or Norfolk and Suffolk Wing HQ for more information.
