ADVENTURE TRAINING COURSES AND OPPORTUNITIES
At Squadron level we provide development training for all staff and senior
cadets who are interested in furthering their Outdoor skills.
We provide an expedition every year aimed at taking those individuals out
into more severe weather conditions, tackling harder terrain. This also
presents time for qualified staff to enhance their leadership and personal
skills.
Norfolk and Suffolk Wing have just run their first Basic Expedition Leader
course (BEL), which Flt Lt Gruchy instructed on. This provides a basic
level qualification which allows staff to take cadets walking in local areas and
even into some easier parts of the Peak District etc. It also allows staff
to run camping weekends. It costs around £75 at present and runs over 4
weekends.
The next step up is Walking Group Leader, however at present the Air Training
Corps does not offer this qualification, but other external providers do.
The Mountain Leader (Summer) Award (MLTB(S)) is the highest award offered by
the ATC. Staff need 20 days logged hill time before attending the training
course, and a further 40 days including some wild camping (not using a campsite)
before Assessment. The course included Micro navigation, safety on steep
ground and leadership skills as well as allowing holders to take groups anywhere
in the UK in summer conditions.
For climbers there are indoor wall courses, which can be arranged with Local
Education Authorities.
The ATC also offers Single Pitch Award courses, similar in requirements to
the ML course, this enables holders to lead group climbing indoors and outdoors
in the UK.
Many of these opportunities are provided free or very heavily subsidised.
